1930s Amsterdam Townhouse
This private residence in Amsterdam’s Oud-Zuid district tells a story of preservation and precision.
The homeowner had just completed an extensive renovation, thoughtfully balancing historic charm with contemporary design. He specifically came to Flare Department to capture the family home in its best light, just as it reached its final form.
The character of the original 1930s build remains intact — visible in the stained glass, the bannister’s curve, and the refined trim work — yet the space has been brought firmly into the present. At its heart is a bespoke kitchen by Proest, with stone surfaces from Jan Reek. The materials are warm and tactile, chosen to complement the natural light that pours through the home.
Photographing this 1930s Amsterdam townhouse unfolded over several moments, allowing us to capture each floor and its outdoor areas in the best possible light. It required sensitivity: not only to the architecture, but to the personal nature of the brief. With the home freshly finished and still settling into its new rhythm, we focused on the relationship between its historic details and renewed atmosphere.
